Suppression of local heat flux in a turbulent magnetized intracluster medium

چکیده
X-ray observations of hot gas in galaxy clusters often show steeper temperature gradients across cold fronts – contact discontinuities, driven by the differential gas motions. These sharp (few kpc wide) surface brightness/temperature discontinuities would be quickly smeared out by the electron thermal conduction in unmagnetized plasma, suggesting significant suppression of the heat flow across the discontinuities. In fact, the character of the gas flow near cold fronts is favorable for suppression of conduction by aligning magnetic field lines along the discontinuities. We argue that a similar mechanism is operating in the bulk of the gas. Generic 3D random isotropic and incompressible motions increase the temperature gradients (in some places) and at the same time suppress the conduction by aligning the magnetic field lines perpendicular to the temperature gradient. We show that the suppression of the effective conductivity in the bulk of the gas can be linked to the increase of the frozen magnetic field energy density. On average the rate of decay of the temperature fluctuations d〈δT 〉/dt decreases as 〈B〉.

Thermal Conduction in Magnetized Turbulent Gas
Using numerical methods, we systematically study in the framework of ideal MHD the effect of magnetic fields on heat transfer within a turbulent gas. We measure the rates of passive scalar diffusion within magnetized fluids and make the comparisons a) between MHD and hydro simulations, b) between different MHD runs with different values of the external magnetic field (up to the energy equiparti...
متن کاملEnhancement and Suppression of Heat Transfer by Mhd Turbulence
We study of the effect of turbulence on heat transfer within magnetized plasmas for energy injection velocities both larger and smaller that the Alfven speed. We find that in the latter regime the heat transfer is partially suppressed, while in the former regime the effects of turbulence depend on the intensity of driving. In fact, the scale lA at which the turbulent velocity is equal the Alfve...

In this paper, Turbulent mixed convective heat transfer of water and Al2O3 nanofluid has been numerically studied in a horizontal tube under non-uniform heat flux on the upper wall and insulation in the lower wall using mixture model. For the discretization of governing equations, the second-order upstream difference scheme and finite volume method were used. The coupling of pressure and veloci...
متن کاملTurbulence and Mixing in the Intracluster Medium
The intracluster medium (ICM) is stably stratified in the hydrodynamic sense with the entropy s increasing outwards. However, thermal conduction along magnetic field lines fundamentally changes the stability of the ICM, leading to the “heat-flux buoyancy instability” when dT/dr > 0 and the “magnetothermal instability” when dT/dr < 0. The ICM is thus buoyantly unstable regardless of the signs of...

The present article focuses on the evaluation of a first-moment closure model applicable to film cooling flow and heat transfer computations. The present first-moment closure model consists of a higher level of turbulent heat flux modeling in which two additional transport equations for temperature variance kθ and its dissipation rate εθ are ...
